Alvino Monk Passes


Alvino Monk, a lobbyist and trade consultant passed away on October 26, 2003.  He courageously fought colon cancer for 2 years.

Mr. Monk was a Consultant for the Jay Malina International Trade Consortium and is credited for the Caribbean trade initiatives for the center.  He organized seminars that assisted and matched businesses from Miami with Caribbean companies as well as led trade missions to Jamaica, Bahamas and Barbados.   He was planning a trade mission to St. Lucia when he became ill.

A native of Hope, Arkansas, Mr. Monk served in the United States Navy from 1972-1976.  He attended Columbia College in Chicago, Illinois with a major in Broadcasting.

In addition, he was the founder and former publisher of the Greater Miami Black Resource Guide and he worked passionately to provide a directory to black businesses in Miami-Dade County.  Mr. Monk was active in the Republican Party and held fundraisers for numerous candidates to include Governor Jeb Bush.  He moved to Tallahassee in 1996 to work as a Lobbyist.  He represented community development groups as well as other public interest organizations.  In 1995, he was one of the organizers of the Small Minority Business International Trade and Assistance Center, an organization founded to promote awareness of opportunities in international trade for minorities.  While living in Tallahassee, he was involved with a government project to match small businesses with corporations.

Mr. Monk supported many community-based organizations and was a consultant for the Miami Beach Black Host Committee prior to his death.  He was interested in developing black tourism in Miami-Dade County and at one time was employed by the Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau.  He had a genuine love for his work and a keen sense of humor.  

He is survived by his son NKosi Zaid Monk of Tallahassee, Florida and daughter, Bertha Monk of Baltimore, Maryland; a granddaughter Brisham Stokes; brothers Ellis White of Kansas City, Missouri and Terry Monk of Wichita, Kansas; and his fianc Dianna Wright of Kingston, Jamaica. 

Memorial Services will be held on Saturday, November 1st at 2:00 p.m. at Unity by the Bay, 411 NE 21st Street, Miami, FL and a celebration of his life will immediately follow.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Nkosi T. Zaid-Monk Education Trust Fund.
