Redskins' Sean Taylor Dies

Former University of Miami standout safety and Gulliver Prep star Sean Taylor has died. Taylor was in critical condition after sustaining a gunshot wound to his upper leg around 1:45 AM EST Monday morning. He died at 3:30 AM EST Tuesday morning, 26 hours after he was shot by an intruder in his home.

He was only 24 years old.

Taylor's father, Florida City Police Chief Pedro Taylor, announced Taylor's death to the public. "It is with deep regret that a young man had to come to his end so soon," the elder Taylor said in a statement on behalf of the family. "Many of his fans loved him because the way he played football. Many of his opponents feared him the way he approached the game. Others misunderstood him, many appreciated him and his family loved him."

Taylor was at home with his girlfriend, Jacqueline Garcia, and their 18-month old daughter, when an armed intruder confronted Mr. Taylor and fired two shots; one hit the wall, the other hit Taylor in the upper thigh/groin area. The gunshot damaged Taylor's femoral artery, causing a significant amount of blood loss. He was airlifted to the Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital.

Taylor attended the University of Miami, where he was an 1st Team All-American free safety in 2003. He was drafted with the 5th pick in the first round of the 2004 National Football League draft. Considered by many as one of the best free safeties in the league, if the not best, Taylor is known for his punishing hits and great cover technique as a safety. He possessed a rare combination of football smarts, speed, and power, with an instinct of locating the ball.

Taylor led Gulliver Prep (Pinecrest) to the Class 2A State Championship in 2000. He was an all-star as both running back and defensive back, with many considering Taylor the #1 Skill Athlete in the nation. Taylor has the record in the state of Florida for single season touchdowns with 44 in his senior season at Gulliver.

"We extend our heartfelt sympathy to Sean's family, friends, teammates, and the Redskins' organization. This is a terrible tragedy involving the loss of a young man who leaves behind many people struggling to understand it," NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said. "Our office is staying in close contact with the Redskins to provide all appropriate support to the club and Sean's family. We also are working to determine the facts surrounding this tragic event. We will honor the memory of Sean Taylor at all games this weekend."
